“Promoting dialogue between the ECtHR and the media freedom community”                                           

The European Centre for Press and Media Freedom, with support of the Council of Europe and its partner organisations, invites you to join a dialogue on freedom of expression between the European legal and the media sphere. It will take place on 24th March 2017 in the Palais de l’Europe Building (Room 1) in Strasbourg.

The one-day conference aims to bring together judges and lawyers of the European Court of Human Rights and media lawyers, academics, policymakers, journalists, media professionals and civil society representatives active in the field of media law and freedom of expression. It will provide a platform to discuss the ECtHR case law in cases concerning freedom of expression of media and journalists.

Key topics to be discussed:
● Defamation, privacy and the processing of personal data
● Investigative journalism, access to information, protection of sources and whistleblowers
● The right to protest and the role of the media during protests.

Silvia Grundmann works for the Council of Europe in Strasbourg as Head of the Media and Internet Division. She holds both German law degrees with distinction, a Master of Common Law from Georgetown University, Washington, D.C. and she passed the New York State Bar Exam. For her PhD thesis she analyzed competition laws. Silvia worked as a lawyer in private practice in Brussels, Washington D.C. and Düsseldorf and thereafter as a judge and professor at a University of Applied Sciences in Northern Germany until 2004, when she joined the Council of Europe’s department for the execution of judgments of the European Court of Human Rights. She then worked as an advisor for two Council of Europe’s Commissioners for Human Rights prior to her current function.Silvia Grundmann travaille au Conseil de l’Europe où elle est chef de la Division médias et internet. Doublement diplômée avec distinction en droit allemand et titulaire d’un master common law de l’Université de Georgetown (Washington DC), elle a été admise au barreau de New York. Pour sa thèse de doctorat, elle a analysé les législations sur le droit de la concurrence. Silvia a exercé comme juriste dans des cabinets privés à Bruxelles, Washington DC et Düsseldorf, et par la suite en tant que juge et professeur à l’université de sciences appliquées en Allemagne du Nord. En 2004, elle a intégré le Conseil de l’Europe, dans le service des exécutions des arrêts de la Cour européenne des droits de l’homme. Elle a ensuite été conseillère de deux Commissaires européens aux droits de l’homme successifs avant ses fonctions actuelles.
